This is one of ten caches placed for the 2014 Cache Across Maryland. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!
Located in Carroll County, the Morgan Run National Environmental Area is comprised of approximately 1400 acres of natural area and around 11 miles of hiking trails. Several outdoor activities are popular at Morgan Run including hiking, equestrian (restricted to certain trails), trout fishing, and birding. There is also periodic managed hunting in the area.
The state has owned the area since 1973, but Morgan Run NEA was not open to the public until 1989. Morgan Run stream, which flows through the area, is a primary tributary of the Liberty Reservoir which provides drinking water to the Baltimore Area. The water quality of the stream makes it an ideal habitat for trout and is one of eight trout-management areas in the state of Maryland.
The trails at Morgan Run are accessible year-round. Since the trails are natural trails, please be careful after some precipitation as the trails can get extremely muddy. In addition, especially in the warmer months, please be on the look out for ticks. Dogs are also able to use the trails but must be kept on a leash. The CAM cache will take you to the back of Morgan Run NEA overlooking Morgan Run stream. Since Morgan Run contains multiple trails with multiple intersections, and the trails are not named, some waypoints have been provided to help with your navigation. Take the trail at N39° 27.974 W77° 00.061 to start your journey. This middle trail will take you almost to GZ.
