Geocache Description:

This is one of ten caches placed for the 2014 Cache Across Maryland. Each location was picked specifically to give cachers a taste of the state and show you its beauty. By combining all ten, you'll be able to see why Maryland is truly "America in Miniature". We hope you enjoy them!

Panoramic by PhoenixFyre76 taken during CAM 2014

Located in Washington County, Maryland, Quirauk Mountain is the highest peak on South Mountain and home to High Rock, the highest point on the Maryland portion of the Appalachian Trail (AT).
Parking is at High Rock, a spectacular scenic vista on South Mountain and once a popular hang gliding launch point. Nearby is the namesake cache from CAM 2005, GCMZVP - CAM 2005 - High Rock.

A loop trail from the parking area leads to the Appalachian Trail. It is approximately a three quarter mile hike from the parking coordinates. Once on the AT, you will find a trail split to the east that leads up to the cache. This trail leads up to the ridge of Quirauk Mountain at approximately 2,000 feet. From here the peak of Quirauk Mountain is to the north at 2,145 feet, but is unreachable without special permission as it is a restricted DOD communications site.

Please no night caching! The park hours are from 8:00 a.m. until dusk. This cache has been approved by the Maryland DNR. Use caution in the High Rock area due to steep cliffs and drop-offs. Please watch young children and pets.
