Geocache Description:

This walk in the Wye Downs is 4.3 miles (6.9 km) and offers some of the most spectacular viewpoints of Kent.
Many fascinating local features dot this beautiful landscape, including Wye crown which was carved into the hillside by school children in 1902 to mark the coronation of King Edward VII. Also, the Devil's Kneading Trough, an impressive pereglacial coombe which was formed during the last ice age.

Parking can be found at N51 11.052 E00 56.226 (see additional waypoint) near to the church.  Here you will also find a small shop for supplies and a public toilet for a strategic break before beginning smiley

The walk has some challenge climbs and a set of steep, uneven stairs – so is unfortunately not suitable for wheelchair cachers and all cachers will need to take a lot of care at these sections.

The following is a guide to the circular walk;

(You can download a pdf of this walk from this website http://www.kent.gov.uk/leisure_and_culture/countryside_and_coast/walking/wye_-_north_downs_way_circular.aspx)

1. From the church follow the path to the right that runs diagonally across the church grounds. Proceed through a gap and bear left and follow waymarkers along an enclosed alley. At the end of the alley, turn right and follow North Downs Way waymarkers to the road.

2. Cross over the road and follow the fingerpost sign up a surfaced tarmac road and go through the metal gate at the end. Continue straight on along a stone track that becomes steeper as you near a road.

3. Cross the road and follow the signposted path straight on and up a fairly steep hill to the edge of woodland.  Go through the gate and follow the path through woods and up a steep climb to meet a road.  At the road, turn right and follow North Downs Way waymarkers.

4. After a short distance, turn right off the road to follow signs for the North Downs Way.  Go through the gap and up a small flight of steps. Follow waymarkers to go through 2 ‘rambler gates’.  After the second gate, turn left and follow the North Downs Way along the fence line. Further on you will find a rest area as well as a commemorative plaque and the Wye Crown on the hillside to your right. At this point, as the fenceline bends to the left, you need to continue straight on across an open section of grass and undulations until you reach a gate.

5. Go through the kissing gate and follow the North Downs Way along the top of the Downs. Near the end of this section go through a gate to join the road.  Cross over the road to the gate and information panel on the other side.

6. Go through the kissing gate and bear left following the fingerpost on a bare earth path through a small area of woodland.  At the waymarker post, turn right and follow the signs for the North Downs Way along a grassy path.  After a short distance, go through another kissing gate and continue straight on.

7. Head through the gate and follow waymarkers and the grass path along the top of the ridge (towards Millstone View).  After a short distance, take the set of steps on your right hand side that wind down the side of the steep hillside.

At the bottom of the steps, continue down the hillside along grass path with more steps. This section is quite steep.

Once at the bottom, go through the gate and follow the waymarkers keeping to the left hand side with the boundary on your left.  The path then bends to the right and down a bank where there are seven more steps to go down before going through a kissing gate to the road.

8. Turn right and head for a short distance down the road until you see a fingerpost and stile on your left. Go over the stile and follow the path across the field. After around 300m the path runs along the field edge, keeping the boundary on your left hand side, continue until you reach a track crossing the path.

9. Cross the track. Bear left and go through a gap between hedges and follow the path and waymarkers along the field edge keeping the boundary on your right hand side. Follow the waymarkers along a wide track heading for two stiles at the end of track at a road.

10. Cross over the road and continue along the wide surfaced tarmac path, after some distance the path enters into a quiet road, continue along until you reach a main road in Wye village. At the main road, turn right and follow the road past the pub until you reach the junction for Scotton Street. Turning left will take you back to the car.

Make sure to look out for the other caches in Wye Village and one that you can pick up along the circular route (‘Why Wye?’)

Don't forget to make a note of the letter for this cache (found on the top of the log sheet) as you will need the letters in order to complete the series of caches (the letters relate to the number of the cache they are found in and should be collected in order)
