Saint Aubin or St Aubin is a village port and opens out to a bay in the Gulf of Saint-Malo.
Saint Aubin's Fort lies in this bay on a "Tidal island", just outside the harbour.
Prior to the early 1540's this island was a flattish shale bank measuring about three hundred yards from east to west, and about two hundred yards from north to south, and home only to gulls, terns and oyster-catchers.
The first fort was built in 1542 and in the beginning it served to protect the harbour from pirates, and in later years was developed as part of the island defences during the many Franco English wars. Major alterations were made in the 19th century, and during the Occupation of Jersey, 1940-45, the Germans added concrete bunkers and gun emplacements.
Today it has being used as a field study centre for the island schools. A classroom has been built within the walls, and the keep converted to domestic quarters. It is equipped with bottle gas, water supplied by tanker, and a diesel generator to supply electricity.
