Geocache Description:

A quick cache near one of Kilcreggans most 'famous faces'

Please note this is a micro cache. Please bring a pen or pencil and replace the cache exactly as found.

The ‘’Tut Tut’’ as it is known locally is a painted rock just north of the pier in Kilcreggan. It has taken on many different guises over the years most notably the form of which gave it its name as Pharoh Tutenkahmun’s death mask. The rock was painted as a face as far back as the 1850’s but took its more recent form in the 1920’s with the discovery of King Tut’s tomb and the subsequent Egyptian hysteria that followed. It was painted in 1851 by a local housepainter named Mr.  Spy to while away his spare time only being touched up from time to time until Howard Carter made his Famous discovery when Tut Tut was added. This then stayed this way until 1981 and since then locals have taken on the task of repainting it. During this time it has been painted many different colours and styles but always keeping to the death mask theme.

Please be careful on appraoching the cache as there is no walkway on this side of the road
