Geocache Description:

PLEASE READ THIS: There is no need to use any force to remove the cache from its hiding-place. Working out how to retrieve it is part of the challenge here. Take a moment to stand back and THINK about how it got there - and then the way to get it out will soon become obvious.

A simple Church Micro drive-by - but please take a moment to look at the church, and learn a little about its history. IMG_8816

The most striking thing about the Havelock Street Presbyterian Church is its architectural style. Described as "polychromatic Italianate", the effect is achieved by building in three different types of stone, so that over the years the stones weather at different rates eventually giving the texture that you see today. Although bizarrely, the effect here was not deliberate - as part of a money-saving exercise the church's builders bought used stone (previously used for ship's ballast) from Newport Docks. The Church, which was first opened on 19th October 1864, is a Grade II listed building.

But that is not the Church's only claim-to-fame. The first Boys Brigade in Wales was started in this church by Mr George Philip Reynolds in 1887 and there is a marble plaque commemorating his life’s work on one inside wall. Outside the church, on the North Street side is a blue plaque depicting the birth of the Boys Brigade in Newport.

Prior to the opening of Havelock St, Calvinistic Methodist (i.e. Presbyterian) services were always conducted in the Welsh language. As more and more residents of Newport were found not to speak that language, Havelock St was built with the intention of conducting services in English. It was the first Presbyterian church to do so.

The cache, which is on Church property, is placed with the kind permission of the Reverend Dafydd Owen.

Please think carefully about how the cache should be retrieved from its location. It doesn't need force - just some lateral thinking. And please ensure that you replace it in the same spot.
