Geocache Description:

Fox’s Pulpit

Or Robin Hood’s Well

Take your pick. Personally I prefer reality to fiction.

In 1652 George Fox had a revelation on Pendle which led him to found the Society of Friends (The Quakers), and a little later he preached to a great multitude from this spot where he had found a spring to quench his thirst. Numerous websites will give you more details.

When I first searched for the spring it was difficult to find but ten or more years back the Barley Rangers put in a metal catchment plus a drinking cup the water being reputed to be the finest in Lancashire and since then it has been visited a little more often so now there is a path to it.

The spring issues where the soft upper layer of sandstone meets the harder rock below – elsewhere on Pendle this has caused landslides – and from time to time it changes place. Last year the flow into the well was so slow that the water was far from pure being full of peat but when I laid the cache it was beautiful although the actual spring had returned to just below where it was when I first found it perhaps 30 years ago. Indeed after the recent heavy rain there were actually three springs.

There are several ways to get here but the simplest is up the main stepped path from Barley and carry on over the stone stile when the wall is reached returning the same way.

The cache is in the obvious place above the well. Take care and re-cover carefully as visitors may sit here for their lunch break.
