You are seeking a short two stage multi cache that begins at the military grave marker for Newton Hiram Skelton, a Veteran of the Civil War.
Newton, originally from Hart County, Georgia, served as a Private in Phelan’s Company of the Alabama Light Artillery. Phelan’s Company of the Alabama Light Artillery was organized at Davis Ford, Virginia December 28, 1861. It was made up mostly of men who had served for a year in Virginia in Company H of the 5th Alabama Infantry. The battery was on duty for about a year in Mobile then joined the Army of Tennessee at Tullahoma. It was part of Walthall's Brigade at Chickamauga where 10 men were killed. It was placed in Cheatham's Division at Missionary Ridge, 6 men killed. It fought daily during the retreat from Dalton, Georgia then moved with Hood into Tennessee. At Nashville 8 men were killed, then the battery was stationed in Mobile until the close of the war where it surrendered 130 men.
