~~The 9th Stafford Sea Scouts were founded and first registered at UK Scout Headquarters in November 1954. As the years went by the Group expanded and contracted, as Groups will, and at various times has included strong and healthy Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Sea Scouts, Senior Sea Scouts and Venture Sea Scouts. At present we have Sea Scouts, Cub Scouts, Beaver Scouts and Explorers.
Stafford Sea Scouts at first had no home of their own and met in a variety of places including Rising Brook School, Highfields Junior School, the old British Legion hut at Milford, and St. Paul's Church Hall in Gardon Street. After a great deal of fund raising and with generous help from Staffordshire County Council, we managed to get a lease on a plot of land which now forms part of the Asda supermarket site, and built a small HQ where we stayed until 1998 when, in return for the un-expired part of our lease we were provided with a splendid new building in Riverway. We moved in in January 1998.
Back in 1954 the group had neither boats nor water on which to float them, nearly sixty years later we have a multitude of Sailing Craft and sail throughout the summer at South Staffs Sailing Club. Add to all this the weekly meetings of all Sections, regular Camps, outings and expeditions, and canoe training it soon becomes clear just how busy and hectic Sea Scout participation can be.
This Cache is the first in what we hope will becone a series placed by the Sea Scouts, with each Cache being named after a Sea Captain.
Please take care when searching for there Caches as the terrain is uneven and can become very muddy, some walking off path is required and this will involve walking over fallen branches and through some undergrowth etc. There is also a unfenced brook in the vicinity, so great care needs to be taken particually with Geo Kids and dogs. In very wet weather the area can become flooded and if this happens do not under any circumstances look for these Caches. Due to the above the first four Caches in the series Anson, Fittzroy, Drake and Cook, are unfortunatly not suitable for wheelchair users or those with restricted mobility.
Not all Caches in this series contain pens / pencils and on some a good pair of tweezers will be required in-order to ectract the Log
