Shinsen-en Temple 神泉苑 Traditional Cache

The site of Shinsen-en Temple was originally a kin-en garden that was created adjoining the south of the Imperial Palace at approximately the same time as the relocation of the capital city to Heian-kyo in the year 794. In March of 824, he offered a kiuho service (service to pray for rain) based on an Imperial order. The Gion Festival originated with a Goryoue that was held at Shinsen-en in 869 when a plague had spread throughout the land, and came to be celebrated every year as Yasaka-jinjya shrine's festival from around 970. The site fell into ruin after the middle ages and the size of the garden was drastically reduced in 1603 when Ieyasu Tokugawa incorporated the majority of the land into Nijo-jo Castle which he built in the area.
Dai Nenbutsu Kyogen is held over three days from the first Friday until Sunday every November.
Admission to the precincts is free and visitors may wander the grounds freely from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm.

神泉苑(visit link)は平安京遷都とほぼ同時期に、当時の大内裏の南に接する地に造営されました。当初の敷地は二条通りから三条通りまで、南北約500メートル、東西約240メートルに及び、池を中心とした大庭園でした。神泉苑には竜神（善女竜王）が住むといわれ、天長元年（824年）に西寺の守敏と東寺の空海が祈雨の法を競い、空海が勝ったことから以後東寺の支配下に入るようになったと言われています。貞観11年(869)には神泉苑の南端（現在の八坂神社三条御供社の位置）に66本の鉾を立てて祇園社から神輿を出し、これが現在の祇園祭の元になったと言われています。中世以降は荒廃し、慶長8年（1603年）、徳川家康が二条城を造営した際には神泉苑の敷地の大部分が城内に取り込まれて規模を縮小しました。
また神泉苑は、壬生寺、清凉寺、引接寺（千本閻魔堂）と並ぶ念仏狂言の寺としても知られています。毎年、苑内の狂言堂で大念仏狂言が催されます。※平成26年からは11月第1金曜から3日間開催
