Acre -Akko is one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in Israel, and as a strategic port town became the base for many cultures - the Greeks and Romans settled it, the Crusaders captured it, and even Napoleon conquered it at one time. The city has retained a great deal of the legacy left by its conquerors, most of it in an easily walkable area.
The walls were initially built by the Ottoman ruler of the area Ahmed Al-Jazzar Pasha after Napoleon´s attempt to conquer the city in 1779. The commanders tower "Burge-el-commandar" is divided into arched halls which were used to hold the Ottomans garrison.
The north-eastern walls now hold a beautiful and rare collection which views the life in Galilee from the 19th up to the begining of 20th century, a fascinating historical heritage with restored authentic sights from the past.
If you’re interested in Crusader history, Akko is definitely the place to go. The Hospitaller Citadel, Templar Tunnel, and various ruins scattered around the area are easily accessible and fun to visit. We got a “combined” pass to visit six historical locations around the city, including several ruins and two museums. What a thrill to walk the same streets Richard the Lionheart once trod!
