Funaoka Onsen Bathhouse 船岡温泉 Traditional Cache

Funaoka Onsen is one of the most iconic bathhouses in Kyoto. For over a hundred years locals and travellers have soaked their weary bodies and sought relaxation here. The building hasn’t changed much since its opening. It is perhaps one of the few bathhouses in Kyoto where time has stood still and it gives a great impression of what bathing in Kyoto meant a hundred years ago. Some of the more impressive features of this bathhouse include the cypress wood bathtub in the garden, the ornate water fountain in the cold water bath and the decorated ceiling of the changing room. Besides that there is a sauna, water jets, an electric bath and a rather large hot bath.

京都には昔ながらの銭湯が今もなお多く存在しており、船岡温泉もその一つです。「温泉」という名称がついていますが、温泉法第2条第1項により定義される「温泉」ではなく、通常の公衆浴場、つまり銭湯です。関西では、こういった「〇〇温泉」という名の銭湯をよく見かけます。この建物はもともと、大正12年に建築された料理旅館「舟岡楼」です。昭和8年、特殊舟岡温泉と改称され、日本初の電気風呂を設けました。戦中戦後には窮乏したものの、昭和22年、一般公衆浴場として営業を再開しました。脱衣場と浴場、隣接する旧船岡楼、旧理髪店の計4つの建造物が国の登録有形文化財に登録されています。外観は料理旅館当時の姿を保っており、看板とのれんがなければ銭湯に見えないほどですが、内装はかなり特徴のあるモダンなデザインです。
