Geocache Description:

Winda Woppa, once the site of the largest timber mill in the Port Stephens area

During the late 1800s the Myall River was used to transport logs from Buladelah to Port Stephens to be shipped to Sydney. A timber mill was constructed at this site and was in operation until the 1920s. You can see remnants of timber along the water's edge where the slipways were built.

In 1990, the local conservation group halted plans to build a two lane boat ramp with 70 car spaces and a further 50 boat trailer parking spaces. This would have resulted in the destruction of large expanses of wetlands. Instead, the council have retained the area and recently built extra picnic shelters and installed electric bbqs. A great spot to have evening meals! They have also done a little landscaping.

The cache is located where some of this landscaping has occurred and is a small container with a pencil inside. There is room for a few swaps.

If time permits, park near the amenities block and follow the track that heads east, it will take you through wetlands and out to the pristine waters of Port Stephens.
