Geocache Description:

This cache located in the Historical Hill District of Carmel-by-the-Sea, is just across the street from the walking path that connects Ocean Avenue with 6th Avenue at Santa Fe. Inside the cache box is a map you may take and use to walk the Historical Hill District.

Hugh Comstock developed the Fairy Tale style architecture with which Carmel-by-the-Sea has become closely identified. In 1924, at the age of 31, Hugh came to Carmel to visit his sister. He had planned on staying just a sort while, but once he met Mayotta Browne, the designer of a popular rag and felt doll called the Otsy-Totsy, he extended his stay.

The April 14, 1924 edition of the Pine Cone reported “the pretty Miss Browne had hung half a hundred dolls on the clothes line in her backyard and was industriously painting their naughty roving eyes when a stranger stopped by with a “Hello!” of astonishment, and that started it all.”

Shortly thereafter, Hugh and Mayotta had married and set up housekeeping in a cottage on Torres Avenue. Mayotta quickly filled every nook and cranny of their tiny house with her Otsy-Totsy dolls. With little room left for the newlyweds to live, Mayotta asked Hugh if he might build her a cottage in their backyard just to display her dolls.

With no construction, or design experience, Hugh built his first Doll House on the east side of Torres between 5th and 6th. Today this cottage, located in the Historical Hill district, goes by the name Hansel.

Comstock built a number of homes in Carmel; twenty-one are still in existence. Eleven reside in a four block hilly area shaded by crooked oaks and gangly pines. Inside the cache is a detailed map of this area and the homes.

Parking is limited but, if you park near Brunos Market you should be able to find the cache and walk the tour of the homes in one hour. This is also near Devendorf Park with picnic area and public restrooms.

Please take a map and put the cache back where found, thank you.
