These seven buildings are among the most recognizable in the Russian capital. They are called "Stalin skyscrapers": Moscow State University at Sparrow Hills, "Ukraine" hotel, the living house at Kotelnisheskaya embankment, "Leningradskaya" hotel, the living house on Kudrinskaya Square, the skyscraper at Red Gate. Today we will focus on the building of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the Smolenskaya-Sennaya square.
The Foreign Ministry skyscraper was built in 1948-1953 (the last years of Stalin). For all "sisters" they carefully chose places. Unfortunately later the city authorities and architects changed the original plans and the perspective was ruined by "overweighted" houses of two hotels at both sides of the square - this is clearly visible from the river. Nevertheless, the building has not lost its grandeur and still dominates the area.
There have been legends around the construction process. It was rather unusual that they first built a massive steel frame (it took them 3.5 months to complete the job) and then did everything else.
There's a striking giant emblem of the USSR made of concrete at a height of 114 metres. Its area is 144 square metres. How much is it? If (very roughly, indeed) we think about this emblem as of a circle, its diameter would be twice the diameter of the famous Clock on the Kremlin's Spassky Tower.
The building was originally designed with a flat roof like the US skyscrapers. There are persistent rumours that Stalin did not like how the tower looked like. He ordered to build a steeple. However, all calculations showed that it was impossible to put a real steeple on the top of the building: the spire would be too heavy. So the constructors had to built a bogus spire of steel and tin. They covered it with paint so it looked like the rest of the building. Sadly, they missed with its colour and this fact can be noticed even from the bottom of the skyscraper.
By the way, this tower is the only one of "sisters" that lacks the traditional Soviet star symbol on its spire. The explanation is the same: a lightweight metal top just could not hold additional weight of a massive star.
There was a microcache with the same name nearby but the owner stopped playing, the cache was muggled and then archived. I thought it would be good to have the series of "Seven Sisters" complete and properly maintained. The new cache is closer to the skyscraper and got a totally different description.

Эти семь зданий - одни из самых узнаваемых в столице России. Их называют "сталинскими высотками": здание МГУ на Воробьевых горах, гостиница "Украина", жилой дом на Котельнической набережной, гостиница "Ленинградская", жилой дом на Кудринской площади, высотка на Красных Воротах. Сегодня речь пойдет о здании Министерства иностранных дел на Смоленско-Сенной площади.
Здание МИД было построено в 1948-1953 годах (в последние годы жизни Сталина). Как и для других высоток, тщательно выбирали место. К сожалению, позднее власти города и архитекторы изменили первоначальные планы, и облик площади был визуально "утяжелен" зданиями двух гостиниц - если смотреть со стороны реки, это хорошо заметно. Тем не менее, здание не утратило своей величественности и, без сомнения, продолжает доминировать в районе.
Вокруг постройки здания сложились легенды. Необычным для того времени был уже сам подход архитекторов и строителей: сначала (за 3.5 месяца) возвели массивный стальной каркас, а затем делали все остальное.
Бросается в глаза гигантский герб СССР, смонтированный из бетонных фрагментов на высоте 114 метров. Во всех источниках сказано, что площадь герба составляет 144 квадратных метра. Много это или мало? Если (очень грубо, конечно) представить герб в виде круга, то его диаметр будет вдвое больше диаметра знаменитых Курантов на Спасской башне Кремля.
Здание изначально проектировали с плоской крышей, наподобие американских небоскребов. Ходит упорный слух, что Сталину это не понравилось и он лично распорядился выстроить шпиль. Однако расчеты показывали, что делать полноценный шпиль невозможно: он окажется чересчур тяжелым для проекта. Придумали шпиль из металлоконструкций. А чтобы он был похож на все остальное здание - покрасили. Увы, как говорят в автосервисе, не попали в цвет. Любой может видеть это даже от подножия небоскреба.
Кстати, высотка МИД - единственная, чей шпиль не увенчан традиционной звездой. Причина та же: легкий "псевдошпиль" не выдержал бы массивную звезду.
Ранее в окрестностях уже существовал микрокеш с таким именем, но его владелец перестал играть, тайник был разорен и перемещен в архив. Я посчитал необходимым сохранить всю серию "Seven Sisters". Новый тайник ближе к высотке и имеет совсем другое описание.
