Geocache Description:

Has there been one sighted "Here?" A Yaffle????

YaffleSeems that the Yaffles have been targeted for extinction in the local area. Every time they find a place to perch some road crew worker comes along and destroys their habitat. So, they have flown south from their native nesting grounds and migrated west to more hospitable roosting. The perching location is green and considered a micro in size. The guts is a micro roll and any logging will require the packing of your own writing instrument for field note logging.

Yaffles are interesting animals and one should study this creature to aid in the trapping of this cache.

Let see what we know about this creature. The usual habitat is more open than those of the pied Dendrocopos species; it frequents old timbered parks, and any open country where there are ancient trees rather than dense woodlands.

Now it's exact size would be a give away so you'll have to take a general description. It's a not a large creature, measured in cm in length with a even smaller breadth, conspicuously dressed, loud calling and habits render it more noticeable when cachers are present.

Though it can be very distinct, colour is not always distinct in the field, much depending upon the light. The outer appearance of the sexes is similar, dark green above and yellowish green below and with crown and nape crimson, but in the male the center of the moustachial black stripe is crimson. Then maybe this is lore and all to be poppy cock even this about around the eyes being black in both males and females, except in the Iberian race P. v. subsp. sharpei which lacks this black area and is all a story. The rump is chrome yellow, the outer webs of the primaries are barred black and white. The bill and feet are slate gray. The crimson at the base of the bill is present in the young of both sexes, and their upper parts are barred, their underparts barred, streaked and spotted.  

It alights on a trunk or bough and works upwards with a diagonal or spiral course in quick jerky jumps or runs, halting occasionally with head drawn back and bill held at right angles to its body. As it proceeds it taps the bark smartly, probably sounding it for hollows made by its prey. Rarely, it will descend for a short distance, tail foremost.

From early in the year until summer the loud ringing plue, plue, plue is a typical woodland call, often described as a laugh, and from which the it gets one of its names, "Yaffle".

Folklore has associated this " song " with a threat of rain, and another name is " Rain bird," but weather has little to do with the bird's calls. Though it has been heard to "drum" upon wood, it certainly does not use this call so frequently as the spotted brothers.

The alarm note is the laugh emphasized and harshened.
