As was common in the early days, there had been a 'mechanics library' in town since 1883. Membership and 'inventory' grew steadily. In 1895 the institution was given the official title 'Public' library. The board of directors applied to the Carnegie Foundation for one of the $10,000 grants to build a proper library but were turned down! They persisted and proved that they met the minimum required membership numbers, (1000), as it served a large number of patrons in and around Teeswater. This Carneige Library, one of 111 in Ontario, was built in 1914. A lot of fund-raising and grant writing took place recently, and in summer of 2010 we celebrated it's grand re-opening. It is wheelchair accessible and still retains much of it's old beauty. Look up, look around at the workmanship! You can even borrow a hand-held GPS here, which is how I got started!
