Geocache Description:

This cache was placed in memory of two local firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The cache is a small camo container. Plenty of room to park and view the monument. At times there will be muggles present, so use stealth.

"Fire Fighter's monument"

While fighting a fire in downtown Pittston on March 15, 1993, West Pittston's Leonard Insalaco II and Pittston's John Lombardo perished when the building's floor collapsed, sending the two firefighters, furniture and debris into a flamed-filled basement.

Their sacrifice has not been forgotten.

A granite monument, paid for with more than $55,000 in donations, was unveiled to the memories of Leonard C. Insalaco II and John F. Lombardo.

This monument was dedicated to Pittston City firefighter John F. Lombardo, 25, and West Pittston firefighter Leonard C. Insalaco, 20, who died in a ferocious blaze on North Main Street in Pittston at the peak of a snowstorm on March 15, 1993. A ceremony to dedicate the monument was held during fire prevention week in October 1994.

Firefighters’ Memorial Bridge

The bridge connecting Pittston and West Pittston, formerly known as the Water Street Bridge, was renamed the Firefighters’ Memorial Bridge on March 15, 2008. The ceremony marked 15 years since Lombardo and Insalaco were killed.

Sometimes we forget how much these men and women sacrifice,
while doing a job they love. They deserve our sincere respect.
