Geocache Description:

This is another geocache on the Invercargill Estuary and highlights the bird life that frequents this lagoon. There is also a trail around the perimeter which is a popular walking and cycling track.

Pleasure bay was a popular playground around 1900 where you could swim, sail, row and picnic. Reclamation of the area was approved in 1910 and by the end of the 1950s most of the Invercargill rubbish was being dumped here choking the one time Pleasure Bay under a mountain of refuse. A causeway was built to enclose a tidal lagoon to prevent rubbish from being washed around the estuary, and it was intended to fill the lagoon completely.

With the cessation of dumping, the former dump has now been converted into a parkland and the lagoon restored to a bird habitat where over 50 bird species have been seen including the rare Marsh Crake and South Island Fern Bird, also the White heron and Godwits. Occasionally Royal Spoonbills frequent the lagoon. Binoculars would be an advantage.

Parking is available at S 46 25.631 E 168 20.453 about 200mtrs from the display structure; toilets will be a short walk north from parking area heading towards the Jelicoe Sea Scouts wharf.

The cache is a 200ml Sistema container hidden at ground level and contains a log book. BYOP

Grass on the bank has become quite lush; with some treading around the cache hide will reveal itself with a wobble. The once dead Elder tree has rotted away but something out of place will reveal the cache hide to a avid searcher. No need to go downhill to the lagoon trees. Remnants of the old tip can be spotted where large pine trees have lifted the protective covering. Unless you have all day, CITO should be confined to the track edges and keeping the shelter tidy. Good luck and have fun. This is a busy walkway and mugglers may zip past without warning.
