Coulrofobie
Coulrofobie is een angst voor clowns. Een clown of Zwarte Piet kan met zijn uitvergrote uiterlijkheden en onvoorspelbare gedrag soms bedreigend overkomen. Deze angst wordt meestal ontwikkeld in de kinderjaren.
Evil Clowns
Boeken als IT van Stephen King (met Tim Curry als Pennywise the Dancing Clown in de gelijknamige film) en horrorfilms als Fear of Clowns, Drive Thru en Saw spelen in op deze angst, maar de "evil clown" duikt ook op in meer mainstream cultuuruitingen, met name in de V.S. en vooral rond Halloween. Een veelgenoemd voorbeeld is het personage van The Joker in de fantasy film Batman, gespeeld door Jack Nicholson en later door Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight.
