This fire lookout is located on Bear Basin Butte. There is a locked gate about 1/2 mile down the hill from the cabin and lookout. It is a fairly easy walk from the gate almost to the cabin, but gets a little steeper for the last little leg. There is a narrow trail from the cabin to the actual lookout building and beyond. The view is AWESOME and well worth the hike. From July 1 to September 30 the cabin will most likely be occupied. Please be respectful should you decide to hike up there.
You can see the fire lookout and cabin from where the cache is, but in order to get to the fire lookout you will have to drive up to the gate and hike in. You are looking for an ammo box with the usual trade items etc. There is a wind-up flashlight for the FTF. Most winters this cache will not be available once the snow flies. However, as you can see by the pictures there is no snow at the time of placement. (A LITTLE HISTORY: Excerpt from a 1989 Forest Service interview of a couple who manned the original Bear Basin Butte Lookout in 1934: The lookout was 14' x 14' built on the rocks. It had guy wires to the corners and then strung up to the peak of the roof inside to hold it down to the ground. It had outside shutters with brackets to hold them up and an outhouse was located to the North on a promontory. There was also some type of lightning rod on the roof. Inside the lookout there was an iron stove and in the center of the room was the "fire finder". As a precaution for lightning strikes the bed had rope springs and the stool by the fire finder had glass insulator on the bottom of the legs.) The current lookout building was relocated from Camp Six in 1997.
