Geocache Description:

Camp Sandy Creek was a World War 2 American Army camp.

Please do not enter the property as the land there is privately owned.

You are looking for a 300ml Sistema type container. Watch out for things that bite, and be aware that the Sandy Creek area is known for the number of brown snakes which inhabit the area. Please replace the cache hide cover so that cache is not exposed.

This camp was used by the Americans during the Second World War. When you are facing North West, the area to the left (among the pine trees) would appear to have been cabins for the American officers. The area straight ahead was where the enlisted men were barracked. This would appear to have been tents, so conditions would have been pretty harsh during Winter and Summer. Further to the right you can still see a concrete slab which are the remains of the ablution block.
One of the claims to fame for the Americans was drinking at the the local hotel. The hotel served prodigious amounts of alcohol to the US soldiers during World War II, who were at Camp Sandy Creek, which was a short distance from the hotel. A plaque was placed at this hotel by several of these soldiers who returned in later years. This was in memory of the good times they experienced there, and for fallen comrades lost during the war. This hotel supposedly holds the South Australian record for the largest quantity of beer served in a single week, set unsurprisingly, after the announcement of the ceasefire at the end of World War II. For those who feel that they would like to run a metal detector over the property, I have already done so several years ago with the permission of the property owner. I can vouch that there are no coins and other memorabilia left as I spent several weeks going over the camp area. Please do not enter the property as, pointed out previously, it is privately owned.
