~Access to this cache can be from two main walkways.
One access point is straight from the Northern End of Hahei beach, where there is a wee walkway and access not too far from the Cathedral Cove 'beach' starting point. It is a mere 50-80 metres from the beach so not a huge diversion, and well worth it.
The second and possibly more scenic access is to walk from the Hahei Shops along Grange road 50 metres heading to Cathedral Cove, but turning right into Tutaritari Road. 150 metres up this bush clad road is a public access walkway leading to the right and down into Tutaritari reserve. This beautiful reserve has seen plenty of weddings amongst the devine Pohutukawa trees that embrace the surroundings.
The tree in question is an evolutionary marvel as it has taken to growing a huge array of aerial roots that hang in massive clumps from its branches.
A plaque indicates the tree as worthy of being'a tree of distinction' and we would love to hear your feedback as we agree!
The cache itself is located close to the plaque but NOT in the tree itself. Please do not leave the boardwalk or go rummaging through the tree, root system or any where else. This fragile giant would like to remain standing for a wee while yet and people walking, climbing and poking around it could prove damaging
Enjoy the cache and the area. - the wee boardwalk under the tree of distinction leads to another beach access ending up on Tutaritari road also.
