What better way to commemorate our area’s Sesquicentennial Anniversary of the Civil War than with a Civil War geo-trail! Come learn about our area’s involvement in the Civil War and explore all that the Winchester-Frederick County area has to offer.
This trail is comprised of 20 cache sites that are part of the Virginia Civil War Trails Program. Learn more about Civil War Trails by visiting www.CivilWarTrails.org. The Winchester-Frederick County Visitors Center is located at 1400 S. Pleasant Valley Road, Winchester, VA 22601. The Visitors Center is open daily from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., closed on major holidays.

Thoburn’s Redoubt
At about 4:00 a.m. on October 19, 1864 the Battle of Cedar Creek began very close to this spot.
The cache you seek is at the posted coordinates, but is inside of a locked box. In order to unlock the box, you need the correct combination to the lock. In order to find out what the combination is, you will have to read the nearby wayside marker and answer one simple question.
The question is: How many letters are in Joseph Thoburn’s rank as shown on the wayside marker? Once you have that answer, it’s time to enter the combination.
Start at the top near the shackle and continue to the bottom. All of the numbers must be entered. Here is an example of how to enter the combination: If the answer is 20 you would enter 020.
