One of the most evocative songs on R.E.M.'s most oblique and impenetrable album, "Maps and Legends" teases the listener with the idea that it just might be about something. Musically, it's probably the most familiar song on the album, as its simple structure and jangly guitars are a direct connection to Reckoning and Murmur, and Michael Stipe's vocals are mixed clearer than they are anywhere else on the album. Lyrically, however, besides a vague idea that Stipe is singing more about misapprehension of one's surroundings than actually being physically lost ("maybe these maps and legends have been misunderstood"), which fits in nicely with the album's southern gothic themes, it's all just a blur. An exceedingly pretty blur, however. Stewart Mason
