Like ‘The Boxer’ by Simon and Garfunkel or ‘Hey Jude’ by The Beatles, ‘Losing My Religion’ will always be a giant of a track that somehow manages to bestride even the most incredible of back catalogues with the ease of Lionel Richie on a Sunday morning. Some songs are great but get overplayed to the point where sometimes you need a break from them for fear of the magic diminishing (To a certain extent, ‘Everybody Hurts’ falls into this category although undeniably magnificent.) However, with the songs I previously mentioned, they rise even above the magnificent and into a category whereby they are so good, they cannot possibly be overplayed. In all these cases, when asked what my favourite tune by a certain band is, we all like to plump for the more unconventional choice (‘The Only Living Boy in New York’… ‘For No One’ and ‘Turn You Inside Out’ in my case) as we somehow feel less cool in picking something that is being shared so widely with the world, but we all have to acknowledge that deep down, they are untouchables. ‘Losing My Religion’ sounds like nothing else from the first bar and is both epic and oh so very catchy at the same time. It bounces along but yet has incredible substance and passion. Michael Stipe at his finest.
