There have been some wonderful moments afforded to us by the 90's phenomenon that was 'MTV Unplugged'... KD Lang launching an incredible vocal climax to her cover or Roy Orbison's 'Crying,' Neil Young playing 'Like a Hurricane' on a church pump organ or indeed having a man playing the broom on 'Harvest Moon' and REM's can boast some truly memorable moments of it's own. It brought us a beautiful cover of 'Love is all Around' long before Wet Wet Wet got their grubby mits on it, there was Michael Stipe having to get the words for 'It's the End of the World as we Know it' on a crib sheet and the absolute high point of the set, where Michael's eye balls roll back into his head while hitting the soaring harmonies at the end of 'Belong'
Whether the song is about searching for inner calm in a world of chaos or not (The lyrics are splendidly vague) it remains a triumph of soaring vocals in the chorus that uplifts in a way The Beach Boys would have been proud.
