Geocache Description:

Cache is located at a spot that I often go while I'm in town to NOT catch crabs. Sure I try and try again, but yet the pots either come up empty or with crabs to small to keep. The day we placed this cache was no exception.

Some of you might have already realized the cache title is a play on a John Denver song. But this is a spot I have spent lots for time hoping for a crab dinner.

On this occasion, I happened to run into a local who had quite a story to tell about the Tokeland of yesterday.

Standing at the edge of the road in front of the cache, turn so the cache is directly behind your back. Do you see those dilapidated pilings off to your right? There are probably a bunch of birds on them, and you might notice an old winch sitting on one of the deck portions that is still intact. According to the local, in the 1970s that dock was constantly filled with fishermen fishing for perch right off the dock. The road you're standing on was typically parked full of campers and cars. The Tokeland area was bustling with fishermen and crabbers.

Now, while you are still standing on the edge of the road, turn to face the cache and look off to your right, you will see an old dilapidated metal building (now torn down but, it's where the drive out platform is to your right). That was a fish processing plant back in the 1970s. They use to toss all of the fish waste and guts right into the water. The EPA eventually put a stop to it. The fish processing plant shut down. That and some illegal fishing and crabbing methods have completely eliminated the perch and severely reduce the crab population.

The above image is of the old Tokeland pier, taken by philgeorge1, in November of 2014. They replaced the old pier with a modern one in 2017, from the cache it was at the end of the road.  I sat many a time on that very bench in the picture hoping for a crab dinner, I still love coming down here and enjoying the view and smell of the ocean.

Look around the entire Tokeland area. Imagine just 40 years ago this place was busy with both commercial and recreational fishing.

One of the other reasons, we decided to place a cache here is because there use to be one on the nearby dock, next to the building I mentioned earlier. It was a micro and I could never find that one, but it has since been archived. I thought I would place this one here to call attention to the area history, and in hopes that since I have placed this cache, perhaps I will be able to find it while in the area for a maintenance check

The cache is a small sized lock n lock container. It should be an easy find, usually there aren't very many muggles around, but it does need to be re-hidden well. So please remember to re-hide as well or better than you found it. Hint should lead you right to it.

Congratulations goes to JBJ Puzzle Solvers for the first to find on 2-05-14
