Benedict, Maryland is a sleepy little town on the shores of the Patuxent River. Currently the population is under 300 people and the town is deceptively off of the beaten path. At one time, though, it was a bustling place and Benedict has a rich and interesting history. It is well known as the launching point of the British army when it invaded Washington, D.C., during the War of 1812.
It also was an important location during the Civil War, and is on the National Parks Service Civil War Trail. Camp Stanton was located in Benedict as a recruiting and training post for the United States Colored Troops established in the heart of Maryland's Southern sympathizer country. (There is a cache at the site of Camp Stanton: GC2A293.)
Tornados and hurricanes have done severe damage to the town, but the views of the river there are beautiful.
