NEARBY LOCATION:
The serenity of a cemetery and the liveliness of a residential area combine in this project. The orthogonal grid of grave-gardens is sliced through by a diagonal alley, an oval walkway and a twisting bicycle route. A playground makes the transition from the Diestseveld Park Cemetery to the residential area. Two buildings are set into the grid. A modest building forms one of the walls surrounding the forecourt. Along with the reception desk, it houses offices, workshops and sanitary facilities. Its large canopy shelters waiting visitors. A square concrete building offers mourning relatives and friends a space for contemplation. Once crossed the pond in which the building stands, they find themselves cut off from the outside world for a while. The only thing left is light, concentrated in a ribbon just above the floor and under the roof, reflected in the pond, determined by time, season and weather. The building serves as a landmark as well, even at night, when its reverse pyramidal roof is lit from the inside.

DICHTBIJ ZIJNDE LOCATIE:
Weinig plaatsen zijn zo emotioneel geladen als kerkhoven. Mensen ervaren er hun diepste verdriet en meest intense verwerkingsprocessen. Toch zijn ze zelden met finesse aangelegd.
De nieuw aangelegde parkbegraafplaats Diestseveld in Kessel-lo is een duidelijke uitzondering. De aanleg van de graftuinen, de verstillende entree, het Japans aandoende ceremoniegebouw, het subtiele grasheuveltje en het tot bezinning aanzettende columbarium … geven het geheel een homogene, uiterst serene uitstraling.

Ondanks dit serene karakter is het kerkhof geen wereldvreemd eiland. Het is op een subtiele manier verweven met de omringende wereld. Dwars door de site slingert een fietspad - op de meest 'gevoelige' plaatsen verzonken - en aan de rand van de Heidebergstraat is een klein maar aangenaam buurtparkje.
Toch zijn het niet zozeer deze 'accessoires' die deze site aangenaam publiek maken, maar het is vooral de landschappelijke structuur die aantrekt. Het lijkt perfect vanzelfsprekend dat je hier op zondagnamiddag komt wandelen als in een verstild stadspark.

Leven en dood hebben hier - in een poëtisch kader - een subtiel evenwicht gevonden. Al zit het poëtisch karakter eerder in de landschappelijke aanleg dan in de versteende verzen die her en der de site verwoorden.
