In 2008, the park was awarded a Green Flag Award. Openshaw Park has a formal design with lawns and areas of amenity grass divided by paths, mature trees and bedding areas, herbaceous bedding area and sensory rockery were created in the park in 2003.
The installation of a large tree sculpture of embracing figures adds a unique feature. During the football season a pitch is marked out for the Sunday Junior Football League. The park is mainly used for dog walking, children's recreational play, sports days, community events and educational activities. The Friends of Openshaw Park formed in 2002 to facilitate local community participation in the continued redevelopment of the park.
