As a long time resident I was less than enthusiastic when the Nickelsville encampment moved to Highland Park Way and West Marginal Way in 2009. After my first encounter with a couple of Nickelodeon's smoking crystal meth along one of my favorite trails I started doing everything I could to avoid them, including driving to other locations despite the fact that some of my favorite trails were just yards outside my front door. I would eventually however become good friends with a few of them, one of which introduced me to Geocaching. We spent most of last spring and summer seeking caches before he left in October to return to Louisiana. Before he left, he asked that I hide a cache near where he used to live; this is a litte further south but I think he'll appreciate the extra effort required to get that smiley. Khecka this is for you; thanks for everything bro.
The trail to the cache can be accessed from either Kenyon and 5th sw, Highland Park Way sw just uphill from Pioneer Industries or from Detroit ave sw just s of Myrtle. The last one being the way the barred campers from Nickelsville entered the greenbelt. It's almost a half mile from all entry points I'm aware of. The trail can be treacherous in the best of conditions. It's steep up and down, is at times less than a foot wide as it traverses the hillside, has log bridges with no handholds, can be hard to follow, may skirt past a hobo encampment, has spiderwebs in the summer and is in places very slippery when wet. So please be careful (especially if you decide to attempt this in the dark) and know your limitations; no smiley is worth endangering yourself for. That said I enjoy the hike and solitude offered by this oft ignored stretch of greenbelt. Congrats to nolenator for the FTF!!!
