Win-Fred CWT-Fort Collier Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

wallmeister22601: Looks like it's time to put this cache to rest.

Over the years I have seen in the logs people say they felt like this was a private residence, even though there is a large sign that reads "Welcome to Fort Collier Civil War Center"

Fort Collier Civil War Center does rent the upstairs of the house out. So yes there are residents here.

Permission was given by the president of Fort Collier Civil War Center, Katherine Solenberger to place this cache.

I have decided to archive this cache since after 9 years ammo cans do not grow legs and walk away and much has changed in the nine years since this cache was hidden here.

Thanks to all who visited this cache over the years.

Fort Collier Built by Confederate Lieutenant Collier and Virginia militia with the aid of Federal prisoners, this redoubt guarded the north entrance of Winchester, Virginia on the east side of the Martinsburg Pike. During later Federal occupations, it was known as Battery No. 10. The fort was set on low ground, and generally offered little military advantage, except as a guard post for the pike. Lt. Gen Jubal Early used it as part of his defensive works in the Third Battle of Winchester. Although it saw action only in the Third Battle of Winchester, Fort Collier stood imposingly throughout the war as a deterrent to attackers and a reminder to civilians of the position in which their city had been placed by circumstances beyond their control.
