This cache was originally placed in February 2014, on my own mission to collect T-2. It was my first trip travelling down this part of the Waiohine Valley, on a tramp from Holdsworth to Walls Whare via Totara Flats. Shortly after the original placement the road in at Walls Whare was washed out, and a large number of trees damaged along the tracks - resulting in a hiatus on publication. A recent opportunity to head back up the Waiohine Valley allowed me to check the cache was still in place and viable - all is good!

The Waiohine is a stunning place to visit, and is relatively easy to visit on a through-trip, or as a (long) day excursion. The Waiohine River rises high in the Tararuas and is 35 km long, with a watershed of nearly 380 square kilometres. After leaving the Tararuas proper the River eventually discharges into the Ruamahanga River before flowing into the sea.

GZ is a fantastic place for camping if you get the opportunity. Be aware the track in from Walls Whare is not a simple graded walking track - as with many tracks in the Tararuas it is fairly gnarly, undulating and requires a bit of clambering and climbing.
As with all New Zealand backcountry, come prepared with suitable clothing, food and water, and tell someone where you're going. The weather in here can change dramatically in a very short space of time.
