A cache placed during a recent opportunity heading back up the Waiohine Valley.
The Waiohine is a stunning place to visit, and is relatively easy to visit on a through-trip, or as a (long) day excursion. The Waiohine River rises high in the Tararuas and is 35 km long, with a watershed of nearly 380 square kilometres. After leaving the Tararuas proper the River eventually discharges into the Ruamahanga River before flowing into the sea.

GZ is a point where you need to make a decision - head UP towards Cone Saddle, or continue on next to the river (either north or south depending on your arrival direction. Be aware the track in from Walls Whare is not a simple graded walking track - as with many tracks in the Tararuas it is fairly gnarly, undulating and requires a bit of clambering and climbing.
As with all New Zealand backcountry, come prepared with suitable clothing, food and water, and tell someone where you're going. The weather in here can change dramatically in a very short space of time.
