The Antrim Gardens, Portrush was officially reopened on Saturday 3rd June by Mayor of Coleraine, Cllr Timothy Deans. The newly refurbished Antrim Gardens is part of the Seaside Towns Initiative which is part financed by the European Union through the INTERREG IIIA programme which is managed by the special EU programmes body, Irish Central Border Area INTERREG IIAIA Partnership (ICABAN) and Coleraine Borough Council.
The central walkway through the gardens leads to a magnificent piece of public art designed by local artist Eleanor Wheeler. The impressive sculpture made from carved brick and glazed ceramic depicts aspects of Portrush history and the archaeological site which formed part of Antrim Gardens. The piece reminiscent of a watchtower or lighthouse, has references to the fortified monastic settlement. Carved imagery spiralling around the piece includes references to people who came to the North Coast, including the Vikings, Cistercian Monks, and the Spanish Armada. To complement the sculpture, Coleraine Borough Council have also commissioned interpretative panels with additional public information on the local history and maritime heritage of the area.
The cache is suituated in a nice wee quiet hideaway. Although may be a high muggled area in the summer months. The cache is a magnetic nano and contains only a log so bring your own pen.
