Geocache Description:

Milburn Chapel & Cemetery

In this approximate location once stood the Milburn Methodist Chapel built sometime between 1787 and 1788 by members of the Milburn Methodist Society. Referred to as the Milburn Meeting House or Milburn Chapel, it was one of the first Methodist buildings in the Shenandoah Valley. In 1812, John Milburn, a converted Quaker who had established the meeting house and cemetery donated the land to the Methodist Episcopal Church. Services continued in the log chapel up until it was severely damaged in the Civil War. Rather than repair the chapel, in 1877, the remaining members of the church voted to build a new church along Martinsburg Pike. Milburn Chapel was dismantled and the lumber sold to a local farm to build a barn. In 1944, the foundation stones were used to repair the wall of Milburn Cemetery. Due to deterioration and neglect, many of the old gravestones are long gone but a few still remain, the oldest identifiable marker dating from 1801. Among those buried in the cemetery are Col. Meredith Helm, a leading officer in the famed Morgan Rifles under Daniel Morgan.

Please do not seek this cache at night. It is available dawn to dusk only. Please be respectful of the area when searching. There is no need to enter the cemetery to find the cache. The container you seek is a micro concealed in a slightly larger host.
