Autrefois principale entrée de Montpellier, le quartier de Richter accueillait un octroi, fonctionnant comme un bureau de douanes; les personnes voulant entrer dans la ville devaient s'acquitter d'un impôt. L'octroi a été déplacé, il est aujourd'hui au milieu du rond-point Christophe Colomb.
