Lesser Spotted Navar #3 Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

RobboAndMum: Archiving as part of a mass archive of all our Navar caches. We noticed today when on a walk around Lough Achork where our "Night Night Navar" cache (GC51X03) was based that it seems the "hide destroying, cache saboteur and cache thief" had yet again been to one of our hides. Multiple clues for various stages were missing and very obviously recently rummaged for where applicable and in some cases the damage to the natural environment was beyond what any genuine cacher could possibly do when searching. Finding a way marker at Night Night Navar where at least 3ft of moss has been removed from an entire tree (all the way around it) and the waymarker itself missing was the final straw for us to say night night to the Navar caches in totality. We suspect we know who it is but let's leave it at that. With this sort of activity we can't guarantee that everything will be there all the time in often hard to reach areas and we don't want the few and far between people who are looking for caches to not find them for one reason or another. We do regular checks after high winds/floods etc but can't keep up with deliberate acts.

We have been considering removing some or all of the caches from Navar for a while due to the massive deforestation works that seem to have no end - whilst it is a working forest, so much has been removed and so many of the views destroyed, the place is not even a shadow of its former self. That, along with already having had to remove some of our favourite caches left us with a list of keeps and archives following an audit this evening. But the keeps on their own only serve to remind us of what is not there anymore and as such, all cache containers, clues, etc, will be removed in due course.

We know lots of (well a few) people had fun here and that made it worthwhile for us - reading the logs always made us smile. Hopefully anyone who had Navar on their to-do list has done so already.

Geocache Description:

Near the exit of the Forest Drive, you will find a path signposted for the "Sweat House", such structures used up to the 18th and even 19th century to aid rheumatism and many other ailments by creating the effects of the modern sauna. The user would light a fire inside the small chamber to heat stones, on top of which rushes were placed to create smoke. Sweat Houses were also used for the inhalation of mind altering smoke.

This cache is located about 200m beyond the sweat house itself and will give you a good view which few will have seen in recent times. Perhaps users exiting the smokehouse in years gone by, may too have ascended to this point to take in the view, their rheumatism all cleared up for a while. We would certainly recommend going in to take a look at the Sweat House en-route to this cache as it is well worth a look - you can even get inside.

Please note that the cache is located by the cliff edge and therefore extreme care should be taken especially with any children or pets. The cache however is in plain sight and is not camouflaged - however you need to be quite close to spot it - please wedge it back tightly in the same spot you found it. It does not require any descent of the cliff. The cache is a small tupperware container, containing when placed a few goodies.

The trail to the Sweat House is over grass which is muddy in places with a moderate gradient over its 450m length. The remaining distance to the cache is off trail through heather and rushes so good boots are advised. Be aware of hidden drainage channels.

Once you arrive at GZ, if you want to attempt Lesser Spotted Navar #4, and are enjoying the off trail terrain, then we would suggest you head West along the top of the ridge where there is a deer track to assist you. We had great fun trialling this route out when we placed the caches and would recommend it. You will come down parallel with the road and just need to reach the bridge to be on your way for cache #4. This will save a lot of time if doing both caches.

If you are just passing by and don't wish to drive around the whole forest drive, you can access this cache by driving up the exit road from the Forest Drive (waypoint given) and park at the top of hill before it becomes one-way and where there is a wider area on the road. However, there is a proper layby just 100m into the drive from this point which you can drive into safely as you can see whether anything is coming.
