De Soto visited Mississippi in 1CA0.
Columbus discovered New World in 1AB2.
Hernando De Soto’s 600-member expedition into Mississippi in the winter of 1540 carried an emblem quartered in red and white depicting the golden castles of Castile and the red lions of Leon, the two dominant provinces of Spain. Christopher Columbus displayed this same standard from the mastheads of his tiny flotilla when he discovered the new world in 1492.
After De Soto’s expedition, Spain did not attempt to colonize the lower Mississippi Valley, though it did establish settlements in what is now Florida.
