Kolmanskop is a ghost town in the Namib desert in Southern Namibia, not too far away from Luderitz. It was once a small but very rich mining village. Today it is a popular tourist attraction.

Geological forces of the desert means that tourists now walk through houses knee-deep in sand. Kolmanskop is very popular with photographers for it's settings of the desert sands' reclaiming the once thriving town.

Near Buffeljagsbaai in the Western Cape is a small place that suffers the same fate. Sand dunes creep up from the beach to drown a once popular holiday village. Slowly the cottages are drowning beneath the white sands.

This place might not be steeped in the same colourful history as Kolmanskop. It does not feature on any tourist itinerary either, but it does hold a certain charm.

Whatever you do, remember to bring your camera along. You will regret leaving it at home, trust me. Finding the cache is only a small part of this adventure. Many photo opportunities will present it self to you.

The 5-star terrain rating is due to the fact that Ground Zero could only be reached by using a 4x4 offroad vehicle, or walking many kilometres over thick sand. Turn off the R43 at coordinates S34 44.517 E019 38.298, and follow the dirt road past Buffeljagsbaai until you reach the sandy path. Many paths leads off into the bushes, but as long as you keep close to the shoreline you should head in the right direction.

Just one small matter of concern, especially if your kids are joining you on this adventure: Be aware of snakes. This area is very far away from civilization and I suspect that snakes could roam about. Please be careful.

Lastly… We hope that you enjoy the area as much as we did. Tell us about your visit and feel welcome to share some photos in your log.
