Geocache Description:

Fort McAllister Historic Park is located on the banks of the Ogeechee River, this scenic park showcases the best-preserved earthwork fortification of the Confederacy. Nestled among giant live oaks, Spanish moss and salt marsh, this park is a beautiful location for camping, fishing, boating and picnicking. It is also part of Georgia’s Colonial Coast Birding Trail so bring a picnic, experience the park’s history, and see the wildlife on the nearby nature trail.

You will not be able to drive past the parking coords unless you are a registered camper staying at the camp grounds.

This cache is located along the Magnolia Trail on Savage Island. You will have to park at the parking coords and bike or hike the one mile to the island. The causeway serves as a designated bike / hike route to the island. If you are a registered camper staying in the camp ground you will be given the code to the gate and will be able to drive to Savage Island. Fort McAllister is the only Georgia State Park whose camp ground is on an island.

The trail is a 1.3 mile loop trail that begins as soon as you get onto Savage Island. Look left of the Savage Island sign on the boat for the trail head and sign with a map of the trail. The trail is flat but there are some roots to negotiate typical of a wooded trail. It is clearly marked and easy to follow. The cache is located within 50 feet of the trail and there is no need to bush whack. There is no need to go off trail until you are no more than 50 feet from the cache.

Please be respectful of the animal and plant life and be sure to Leave No Trace behind except for your footsteps and take nothing but memories and perhaps some swag from the container. So grab a park map and just follow your GPS receiver!

Remember to Get Out, Get Dirty, Get Fit and enjoy the park!
