Ducky Medwick was a major league baseball player who played for the St Louis Cardinals during the early 1930's. He remains the last National League player to win baseball's Triple Crown. In 1937 he led the League in Home Runs, Runs Batted In and Batting Average. A natural Left Fielder, he was a hard-charging player, a la Ty Cobb and Pete Rose. He was actually thrown out of the 7th game of the 1934 World Series for sliding hard into the Detroit Tiger 3rd Baseman. To this day, he is still the only player ever tossed from a game for his own safety after the Tigers fans started pelting him with garbage and beer bottles after the play!

I heard the following stories from an old family friend who ran into former player Bill North and major league umpire Joe West while he was visiting the Baseball Hall Of Fame in Cooperstown, NY.  After observing the display dedicated to Ducky, who was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1968, my  friend spotted these two having a drink, and asked them if they'd ever seen him play.

North said, " I only saw him on a highlight reel from the World Series.  He hit that ball crazier than I'd ever seen! He took two mighty swings but missed, trying to put that ball into orbit! On the third pitch, he just sorta bunted the ball over the charging third baseman's head! He took off for first while the third baseman ran the ball down, and the Left Fielder kept running in! Suddenly, the third baseman falls down! The second baseman, seeing Ducky bearing down to second, screams for the ball! The Third baseman throws the ball too high to second! Ducky picks himself up and keeps on charging to third! The Left Fielder, sees the third baseman in difficulty and runs to third base. The Second Baseman relays the ball to him just in time to catch Ducky!! Wow! What a play!"

Old Joe West put down his malt beverage, looked at Bill and my friend and said, Oh yeah?" I can better that one! West waited for the scoffing to stop and said, "I recall watching Ducky in my rookie umpiring year, I think it was Ducky's last in the Big Leagues. He was playing for Brooklyn I think, near the end of the season. Same sorta thing, two monster swings and misses, and then, 'Crack' he smokes a ball to the deepest part of right field! He starts chugging around the bases! The Right Fielder gets the ball but hits a gopher hole and falls on his face! Ducky sees this and starts circling the bases! The Center Fielder has to run over and get the ball! Looks like it's gonna be an inside the park home run! The Center Fielder, in desperation, heaves the ball home on the fly! The Catcher catches the ball and turns just in time to tag out a sprawling Ducky! 'Yer Out!! ', I roar! One of the most spectacular plays I ever saw!

My friend listened to this, thanked the two old timers for such engaging stories and ran off to check the internet to find a scorecard to see if such tall tales were possible...

Have fun, eh?
