Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the given coordinates and you will have to do some work before you get to the earth launch site.




For the first moon landing, Mare Tranquilitatis was the site chosen because it is a relatively smooth and level area. It does, however, have a high density of craters and in the last seconds before landing, the Lunar Module, Eagle, had to be manually piloted by Neil Armstrong to avoid a sharp-rimmed crater measuring some 180 meters across and 30 meters deep known as West. The LM landed safely some 6 km from the originally intended landing site on July 20, 1969. Approximately 18 seconds after his and Buzz Aldrin's successful landing, Armstrong announced: "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.”[


The Apollo 11 landing site is depicted in selenographic coordinates. Selenographic coordinates are used to refer to locations on the surface of Earth's moon. Any position on the lunar surface can be referenced by specifying two numerical values, which are comparable to the latitude and longitude of Earth. The longitude gives the position east or west of the Moon's prime meridian, which is the line of longitude passing through the point on the lunar surface directly facing Earth. This can be thought of as the midpoint of the visible Moon as seen from the Earth. The latitude gives the position north or south of the lunar equator. Both of these coordinates are given in terms of degrees.


Longitude on the Moon is measured both east and west from its prime meridian. When no direction is specified, east is positive and west is negative. For precise applications, many coordinate systems have been defined for the Moon, each with a slightly different prime meridian. The IAU (International Astronomical Union) recommends the "mean Earth/polar axis" system, in which the prime meridian is the average direction (from the Moon's center) to the Earth's centre


Your mission is:


1. To find the exact IAU selenographic coordinates where the Apollo module landed.

2. Convert these coordinates to Terrestrial coordinates by substitution in the formulae:


S 34 h(j-h).(b-f)(e+d)f and E 019 (g+a).(i-c)(a-h)e

3. Take the first and last words (eleven letters) in the name of the institution and assign numbers to each letter in sequence starting with zero to ten to find the launch site.
