The Verne Citadel started life in 1847 as a site to hold prisoners building the Portland harbour breakwater. It then became a military barracks and fortification. The citadel now contains a modern prison, HMP Verne. Within the grounds of the citadel there is a fantastic café which is open to the public and staffed by the prisoners. The café serves reasonably priced food and drinks and has views over Weymouth bay cannot be beaten. Please check the opening times of the café before visiting (easy to find with an internet search)
For more information on the citadel and its history I would recommend visiting this informative website (and has some very interesting pictures): The Verne
The Isle of Portland is internationally important for its geological interest. The Island has a rich assemblage of plants and animals associated with limestone grassland, scrub and coastal habitats, a combination of features and species unrepeated elsewhere. Portland is one of the richest coastal limestone sites for lichens in the British Isles. Portland is also a famous site for the study of bird migration centred on the observatory at the Bill.
I hope you enjoy my geocache – I have enjoyed many of yours, so its about time I gave one back!
