Pillars of Hercules is a little hidden wonder with a very cool swing bridge to top it off!
But what is you might ask? This is a very good question and one that I had to figure out myself with "limited" knowledge available on the subject when we went out on our adventure. Funnily enough we met some people in the car park who had walked 2km and not found it, not knowing in the first 2 minutes of walking they had crossed over it.
Pillars of Hercules is an amazing rock formation that has been created by the mighty Tongariro River. It is a very tight passage that the water must flow through with towering rock walls. When standing on the swing bridge above it is hard to see the significance however if you make the journey to this Cache or even more adventurously down to the river below you will see the beauty that mother nature has formed.
When you reach GZ (Ground Zero) please enjoy the view but don’t get too close to the edge. There are no safety rails here and it is a very long way down.
If you are determined to get down to the river it is possible however this is no easy feat. This is very steep gorgy terrain where it is easy to get bluffed out.
Cell phone reception did not seem to be an issue however I recommend either printing off information or saving it to “offline” just incase
BYOP (Bring your own pen/pencil) and please enjoy, take photos and of course return the Cache to its original position before you leave
