Geocache Description:

The cache is not at published coordinates but you could park here.

This cache is located at the Humber Bridge, The Humber Bridge is a way of Traveling from Yorkshire from Lincolnshire or vice-versa in less than 10 minutes

History

The old way to cross the river was to cross by boat from Hull to New Holland or a hovercraft but that only lasted from February to October 1969 due to the Humber’s rough waters. Plans for the bridge were thought up in 1930 and were revised in 1955. It was officially opened by Elizabeth II. For 16 years it was the longest single span suspension bridge in the world! During construction of the bridge, the road deck sections were floated up on barges then hoisted into place by cables. During one of these lifting operations some of the cables on one of the road deck sections failed, leaving the section hanging at an angle. The section was, however, subsequently rescued and used.
