Mambeg is a small hamlet on the Rosneath peninsula. The pier that was once here was built sometime around the1820’s. (this being only 50 years after nearby Helensburgh was founded). Not much now remains of this pier which was frequented many times a day by steamers up until its demise in the early 20th century with the outbreak of world war 1. From the shore you can still see what remains of the pier and the pier masters house (aptly named pier house) the remains are the small outcropping of stone leading out into the loch. From this spot it is also possible to see the points of where 3 of the 8 Gareloch piers once stood.
The fascinating history of the gareloch and its piers are rich and varied and is told throughout our series of caches the old pier - Rhu, Shandon, Garelochhead, Mambeg, Clynder and Blairmore view cove.
