Geocache Description:

A cache in Greytown

When Greytown was subdivided by early pioneers in the late 1850's the main street was bordered by small sections known as " Town Acres". These were in turn sourounded by 40 acre farmlets. The early pioneer farmers had no access to metal nails or metal fencing materials so their solution was to build fences using only locally grown, on site materials.

Totara trees were felled and split and crafted into fences such as the one at this cache site without the use of any nails or metal fittings. Totara is a very dense hard wood and so long it is kept dry or can dry out will last a long time.

This fence is one of the original Greytown farm fences having stood in place for well over 100 years. Totara blocks were also used for houses and many local buildings still have original totara blocks supporting them.

Not much is known about the house behind the fence since all records were lost in a fire. It is believed it was constructed about 1905.

The owners are aware of the cache and there is no need to touch or cross the fence to locate it
