Germans settled Anaheim in 1857 and they wanted to brew beer so they started growing hops. They soon found out that the local white population did not want to work the fields for $1.50 a day and the Indians were unreliable workers so they advertised in San Francisco for Chinese labor to come to work the hop fields. Many Chinese came in the late 1870's. They established a Chinatown that was centered on Chartres Street between Anaheim Blvd. and Lemon St. That location is now under the parking lot to the South of GZ. There was a great deal of friction between the Chinese and the locals. Chinatown was eventually knocked down, in 1924, for sanitary reasons according to the Anaheim Gazette. It is my opinion that the settlement was destroyed because of the influence of the Ku Klux Klan and was done for ethnic cleansing. The Klan had control of the City Council and the Police department until they were kicked out in 1925.
There is a lady across the street who is taking cache containers so I have put this one about nine feet up, hopefully she will not be able to get it. Congratulations to d4wmike for FTF.
